HOST: $(hostname).$(domain)
LINE: $(line)

Maybe replace the ^C with an % when you configuring the MOTD - Banner. When you see it in some configuration - you can estimate where it come from.
Useful show commands on a Cisco IOS Device during Baseline Capture
Put it there in the enable Mode
terminal length 0
terminal exec prompt timestamp
terminal width 512
Every show command displays current time and there synchronisation and the CPU utilization before the requested printout.
To disable it:
terminal no exec prompt timestamp
